5 Highlights of Cusco BESIDES Machu Picchu

Sure, if you’re heading to Cusco, Peru you’re going to want to make a trip through the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu… but what about those days before and after you see it? Machu Picchu isn’t the only beautiful and fascinating thing to see and do while you’re in the area. Here are five highlights of what to consider filling your other days with…

1. The Llama Farms

Head to one of the many llama farms spread throughout the region and get up close and personal with these sweet and rather funny looking animals. Most farms will give you whole stalks of alfalfa so you can actually pet and feed them. Just remember one important thing if you decide to spend a day with these guys…they do spit.

2. Historic Parks & Churches

Cusco is known for its rich cultural history and gorgeously designed churches. Most buildings you will find are made of massive granite blocks, which are used to shape and perfectly construct the entire structure into a whole puzzle pattern. Check out the Church of Santa Domingo, built in the 17th century if you want to see some of the finest most remarkable stonework. The parks are perfect for a leisurely stroll and a great way to gain more historical information about the city.

3. Local Markets…More Llamas?

Stacks on Stacks on Stacks of Alpaca Wool. No worries, they're not harmed, just sheered like sheep.

Okay, so there most likely won’t be any more llamas to pet and feed at the local markets in town but there WILL be some of their soft fur for sale! Haven’t you always wanted a llama blanket or maybe you've been searching for the perfect gift to take home to your loved one. Why not a llama jacket? Well, whatever it is you want these local markets have got you fully covered…literally!

4. Volunteer With in Local Communities

Of course when you’re on a holiday or vacation, it’s usually always evolved around what awesome things you can see, do and experience. But consider your trip as an opportunity to make a difference in the places you visit, too. Making a lasting impact is at the heart of what we do at Justifi, working with local communities in the remote regions outside of Cusco. And while it's more difficult to arrange short-term projects that make a lasting difference as a solo traveler, there are surely some local organizations that are looking for long-term volunteers. You can also look for places you could visit for a day and make a small contribution and possibly help lend a smile.

5. Discotheques at Night

Of course, it helps to roll in with a great crew.
